Welcome to the 2016-17 year. I am Mrs. Manning and have been teaching third grade for 18 years. I love this age and their enthusiasm for learning. Our class of "All Stars" is learning about many things.
Check in with your child to see if they are working on this vision and mission statement each day. This is the statement they committed to at the beginning of the school year and they need to keep it up into the new year of 2017!
Mrs. Manning's Class Vision-
We will be star panthers.
Mrs. Manning's Class Mission
We will read and do math every day at school and at home. We will be kind to everyone and helpful to all. We will learn something new together every day.
Reading- We are using inferencing to understand what the author is telling us with clues. We are figuring out what is happening through those clues. We are also looking at drawing conclusions to figure out what is going to happen next. This is a great question to ask your child after they read a book. They will have to take all the clues from the book to figure out what will happen next. In the next few weeks we will be reviewing all the skills we have learned and really focusing on the strategies for the SOL. Continue to practice online for the reading SOL.
Writing- We finished our how to check out a book bookmark and how to catch a Leprechaun. They has many unique ways. We will be reviewing our word analysis skills for the next few weeks. This includes, prefixes, suffixes, homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms, abc order and guide words. QUIA site is a great place to play games for each of these topics.
Math-We are into fractions and the kids are loving it. We need to identify them using an area, set or number line view. They need to compare them using <>= signs. We also move into mixed numbers and improper fractions. Finally we add and subtract them with like denominators. It is a jam packed unit and the kids love it. We have lots of games for fractions so check out my math games folder for some you can print to play at home.
Spelling- We are on our last spelling unit for the year. Our test is on March 31 for unit 10. Afterwards we will move into a vocabulary review unit each week with curriculum words from reading and math to help review for the SOLs. There will be a take home list and we will be testing each Friday. Again these are review words from the units we have completed so they are confident going into the test for the words they need to know.
SS- We have studied all of Greece and will be reviewing and moving onto Rome. They will need to compare and contrast the two so they are familiar what is differences in the two.
